Training Design of Marine Auxiliary Systems – Module 4: HVAC and refrigeration systems
The training series Design of Marine Auxiliary Systems covers the main aspects of marine auxiliary systems on board of vessels or offshore platforms. During four modules the participants are given an overview of the main auxiliary systems, their main components, the fundamental working principles and the design aspects & considerations. The theory is practised by means of exercises during the modules. Each module can be followed separately, but combined they provide the participant a complete overview of and the in-depth knowledge required to design all marine auxiliary systems. ‘HVAC and refrigeration’ is the fourth module in the series.
Module 4 ‘HVAC & refrigeration systems’ covers the fundamental working principles as well as design aspects of Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning systems (HVAC) and refrigeration systems’ (required for cooling of air). The first day the theoretical background such as thermodynamics of humid air, Mollier diagram, processes in air handling units and in rooms will be explained. The second day the practical aspects of the design of these systems will be covered, such as complying to the rules & regulations, heat load balance, and design considerations. At the end of this module the participant will be able to design a proper functional layout of these systems and perform the main calculations required for designing a well-functioning system.
- Humid air: composition, thermodynamics, absolute and relative humidity

Target group and lecturers
This module is intended for technical personnel who either has to design HVAC and refrigeration systems, or match and integrate these systems with other auxiliary systems. Salesmen, purchasers as well as managers may also benefit of this module.
On the first day the lecturers are professor D. Stapersma MSc and assistant professor P. de Vos MSc of Delft University of Technology, faculty Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering. The lecturers of the second day are P. Voorn MSc and R. Cordier de Croust, who both have extensive experience with the design of HVAC systems and have already given several trainings for the maritime industry.
Together they provide a perfect combination of theoretical background and practical design knowledge.
